The Clippers were on the board for the 13th selection in the 2018 Draft, one pick after trading Miles Bridges to the Charlotte Hornets for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. With the Clippers securing the point guard of the future they wanted, the 13th pick was open to draft arguably the biggest name still available, Michael Porter Jr. However, Jerry West and the LA Clippers surprised everyone by choosing a dark horse pick who was initially projected as a second-round pick: Jerome Robinson.

Robinson, 21, is coming off the best season of his college career after averaging 20.7 PPG and earning All-ACC First Team as a junior. Despite these achievements, he has been flying relatively under the radar amidst all the biggest names. However, his draft stock skyrocketed after working out with different teams and being interviewed by them. More than having what his coach at Boston College calls the “It Factor”, Jerome Robinson displays maturity and intelligence well above his age. His decision to stay at Boston College, when so many others would have left, and lead them to their first winning season since 2011 is not overlooked by the NBA teams, especially by Jerry West, who is looking to build a winning culture post-Lob City.

For Jerome Robinson, it’s all about letting his game do the talking. And we saw a glimpse of it during the NBA Summer League, where he averaged 13.7 PPG in under 24 minutes. With smooth jumpers, explosiveness with the ball in his hand, and an underrated distributing ability already in his arsenal, he looks to improve by watching tape of the NBA’s best guards and shooters such as Kyrie Irving, Steph Curry, and Chris Paul. It’s no wonder he was voted by his rookie class as 2nd to have the best career. The list of players picked at number 13 include legendary scorers such as Kobe Bryant and Karl Malone, and more recent, hyper-offense types such as Devin Booker and Donovan Mitchell, and Jerome Robinson is ready to one day join their ranks as someone 12 other teams should not have overlooked.
