Don’t let the score fool you, this was not a close game.
The Chargers came out of the gates firing and they scored in the bunches. Rivers had another fantastic day spreading the ball around. Mike Williams started off the party with his first career touchdown, then Melvin Gordon proceeded to have a hat trick before halftime, scoring three TDs (1 rushing, 2 receiving). Austin Ekeler showed his explosiveness and continued to show that he will be a common focal-point in this offense.
The biggest surprise that I saw from today was the emergence of Virgil Green. I had wrote about him in the offseason, about what I thought he could be for the Chargers this season. After the poor preseason full of drops and the signing of Gates, I didn’t think much of him until today. He showed out making several “Henry like” plays where he would split the defense for large gains. I am excited to see Rivers use Green more, and maybe target Gates more for the Red-zone.

The real show of the day was the defense and the rookies that showed out today. Kyzir White with his first career interception, Adrian Phillips had an interception, Nwosu with his first career sack, and James with another 2 sacks. It was a fun day to be a Chargers fan, the defense was all over the Josh Allen led Bills. We frequently question draft picks from Tom Telesco, but those days are gone. The 2018 Draft has brought the Chargers 4 starting defensive players, in the first 4 rounds of the Draft. Most teams would be lucky to get 1 or 2 starters from a draft class, especially this early in the season.

The Chargers go back to Los Angeles and prepare for the “Battle of LA” next week, as they take on the Rams. Going into the season, I thought that this was going to be one of the hardest games of the season. The Chargers can make a real statement next week, against a hot 2-0 Rams team.
