The Rule 5 draft is coming up on December 13th and the Angels felt like adding these three guys to the 40-man roster was important. By adding them to the 40 man roster, they are not eligible to be picked in the Rule 5 draft.
Jose Suarez
Jose Suarez is a 20 year old left handed starting pitcher who pitched across three levels during the 2018 season, A+, AA, and AAA. Suarez started 26 games with a 3-6 record and a 3.92 ERA (Earned Run Average) in 117 innings pitched with 142 strikeouts, 44 walks, and gave up 5 homeruns. Jose, who is currently ranked the Angels 8th best prospect is estimated to make his debut sometime in 2020 according to MLB Pipeline.
Luis Rengifo
Luis Rengifo is a switch hitting infielder who is 21 years old. Rengifo was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays as a player to be named later for 1B C.J. Cron (who was just DFA’d by the Rays and claimed by the Twins). Rengifo played across three levels as well, A+, AA, and AAA where he compiled a slash line of .299/.399/.452. Luis, scored 109 runs, hit 30 doubles, 13 triples,and 7 homeruns while stealing 41 bases last season. Rengifo logged time playing second base and shortstop last season, but he has played third base and the all three outfield positions in his career. Rengifo, who is currently ranked as the Angels 10th best prospect is likely going to be heading into spring training competing for either the 2B or 3B starting spot.
Luis Madero
Luis Madero is a right handed starting pitcher who is 21 years old and was acquired by the Angels at the 2017 trade deadline from the Arizona Diamondbacks for Relief Pitcher David Hernandez. Madero started 23 games across two levels of A and A+ with 4-8 record and 3.49 ERA. Madero pitched 105.2 innings pitched while striking out 95 batters, walking 27, and giving up 8 homeruns. Luis, is currently not among the Angels top 30 prospects and will not likely be contributing to the Angels next season.
