It’s no secret that the Rams offense has looked sluggish since their bye week.  Part of the blame can go to starting quarterback, Jared Goff, who has looked awful as of late.  Part of the blame can go to head coach, Sean McVay, whose play calling hasn’t been as game breaking as it was earlier in the season.  You could also blame the sluggishness on the fact that the Rams clinched the NFC West.

The Rams mindset may not be on the upcoming regular season games but rather looking ahead to the postseason.  Regardless of who is to blame, I and all other Rams fans would feel a lot more comfortable heading into the playoffs if the Rams offense returned to mid-season form.  In order for this to happen, the Rams have to give the ball to Todd Gurley.

Currently this season Todd Gurley has 1,203 rushing yards, 504 receiving yards, and 19 total touchdowns.  He’s having another incredible year and is on his way to a second straight offensive player of the year award.  Gurley has thrived ever since McVay arrived to Los Angeles and has become one of, if not the most dangerous offensive weapon in the NFL.  In fact, over the past two seasons there has been a big pattern between the Rams success and the amount they use the star running back.

2017 season

  • Rams record when Todd Gurley has over 100 rushing yards: (6-0)
  • Rams record when Todd Gurley has less than 100 rushing yards: (5-4)
  • Rams record when Todd Gurley has over 20 total touches: (9-0)
  • Rams record when Todd Gurley has less than 20 total touches: (2-4)
  • Rams record when Todd Gurley scores multiple touchdowns: (4-2)
  • Rams record when Todd Gurley scores just one touchdown: (3-1)
  • Rams record when Todd Gurley fails to score a touchdown: (4-1)

2018 season

  • Rams record when Todd Gurley has over 100 rushing yards: (6-0)
  • Rams record when Todd Gurley has less than 100 rushing yards: (5-2)
  • Rams Record when Todd Gurley has over 20 total touches: (8-0)
  • Rams record when Todd Gurley has less than 20 total touches: (3-2)
  • Rams record when Todd Gurley scores multiple touchdowns: (5-0)
  • Rams record when Todd Gurley scores just one touchdown: (5-1)
  • Rams record when Todd Gurley fails to score a touchdown: (1-1)

So over the past two seasons, the Rams are a whopping 12-0 when Gurley gains over 100 yards and 17-0 when Gurley has over 20 touches.  Todd Gurley is who the Rams must ride to move the ball down the field.  When Todd Gurley has less than 20 touches the Rams are 5-6 over the past two seasons.  The analysis is simple.  When Gurley gets fed touches the Rams are virtually unstoppable and when Gurley isn’t a focal point of the offensive attack the Rams are just average.  The best way to get the offense back on track is to give the ball to the best player.  It’s time to feed Todd Gurley.
