Lakers head coach Luke Walton parted ways with the team after 3 seasons this past week. Walton’s job security seemed to be in question since the signing of LeBron James.
Lakers management did not hire Walton as he was already head coach when Magic became President of Basketball Operations and Rob Pelinka became the team’s General Manager. Jeanie Buss was in favor of Walton remaining head coach but with questions of his security, they decided to part ways.
Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss have begun the search for the next head coach of the Lakers. Pelinka and Buss are looking at 3 candidates, Monty Williams, Tyronn Lue, and Juwan Howard. All three candidates deserve a head coaching job but only one coach on this list has won a championship and that is Tyronn Lue. Tyronn Lue was a former Laker in the early 2000s so he is familiar with the city and he also is very familiar with LeBron James. The Lakers must maximize their chances to win now as long as LeBron James is still in his prime. A superstar’s prime years don’t usually go into their mid-30s but in LeBron’s case, he is still a superstar player at the end of his prime.
Tyronn Lue would be the perfect coach for the Lakers in order to win next season. Everything depends on the roster and how it shapes up in the offseason but a stable head coach with championship experience is what the Lakers need to make a deep playoff run next year. Tyronn Lue is also a coach that will coach LeBron harder than Walton did and ask more of him on both ends of the floor. Lue can also be a good coach for the younger players by teaching them how to win a championship.
The Lakers coaching search should be wrapped up by next week and Tyronn Lue should be the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.
