As reported by nbcsports.com, the Los Angeles Kings are one of the three teams in discussions with the Toronto Maple Leafs as to acquire the services of Patrick Marleau.
Marleau has been discussed in trade talks because of salary cap issues. The Kings, along with the Arizona Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche, do not have any cap space so there will have to be something worked out on both ends. However, they do have some contracts that could be moved in the deal. This move could be one that the Kings need to help them with their offensive issues. The deal, however, could also set them back as they try to get younger and faster.
Marleau can still produce offensively, recording 37 points last season on 16 goals and 21 assists. He is showing durability as well, playing in all 82 games this past season.
The Kings need more offense, there is no secret about that. Marleau can give them a veteran presence and leadership while the Kings are in rebuild mode. He also does have that connection with newly named Kings coach Todd McLellan. He has the ability to play either the second or third line, as well as a powerplay and some penalty kill. Time will tell if the Kings are able to pull the trigger on this deal, or if they even want to continue to pursue his services. He is not the young talent the Kings need but he provides something else to the team.
Would you like to see the Kings make this move, yes or no and why?
June is the month before free agency begins and we all know anything can happen so do not rule out the Kings making some kind of move before that happens. Remember the draft is upon us as well.
