The Los Angeles Angels have signed 2019 World Series Champion 3rd Baseman Anthony Rendon to a 7-year deal worth $245M along with a no-trade clause.
After missing out on top free-agent Starting Pitchers RHP Gerrit Cole (Yankees), RHP Stephen Strasburg (Nationals), and RHP Zack Wheeler(Phillies), the Angels went after the top position player on the free-agent market.
Rendon is coming off an MVP caliber season in which he finished 3rd in the NL MVP voting. He worked a slash-line of .319/.412/.598 and hit 44 Doubles (led the MLB), 3 Triples, 34 Home Runs and drove in 126 Runs (Led MLB). He also drew 80 Walks to 86 Strikeouts and was also stole 5 bases in 6 attempts.
Anthony Rendon has spent 7 years in the big leagues and all with the Washington Nationals after they drafted him in 2011, player draft as the 6th overall player that year. Since making his Major League debut in 2013, Rendon has played in 916 games producing a slash line of .290/.369/.490.
During those 916 games, he has hit 245 Doubles, 15 Triples, 136 Home Runs while driving in 546 Runs and drawing 409 Walks compared to 610 Strikeouts. Rendon is a 1x All-Star (2019), 2x Silver Slugger (2014, 19′), and finished in the top 10 in NL MVP voting 3x (2014, 17′, and 19′).
The signing of Rendon to play the hot corner has now made the infield for the Angels even better.
The left side of the infield has Rendon at 3rd and Andrelton Simmons at Shortstop with some combination of Albert Pujols, David Fletcher, Jared Walsh, Luis Renigfo, Matt Thaiss, and Tommy La Stella as guys to cover the rest of the infield at 1st and 2nd Base.
