On Thursday (3/12), it was announced that the NHL would be suspending its season due to the coronavirus pandemic spreading across the entire globe.
While the Ducks were among the teams sending us off into this long break, there won’t be any Ducks hockey in the near future, as government officials try to restrict the spread of the highly-contagious virus.
So, what’s there to do?
Here are a few things you can do to take your mind off of Ducks hockey and keep yourself entertained at home while everyone else buys up all the toilet paper for some reason.
Catch Up On Your Shows
Everyone has a crammed DVR or super-long Netflix list filled with shows they’re “going to get to” at some point. Now’s the perfect time to start slogging away at that list.
Without sports, your nights and weekends have suddenly opened up, so start plowing through those crime dramas and reality shows that have been sitting in your queue all season. Just don’t get sidetracked and start watching The Office for the 800th time.
Play Some Video Games
You probably already have a Playstation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, or some sort of gaming console lying around. Use the downtime to start playing something engaging.
There are even games like Dauntless, Warframe, Fortnite, and Paladins, among others, that are free-to-play, allowing you to kill some time without spending any cash. Of course, the PS2 in your closet won’t play the new games, but you can always revisit those old NHL games and reminisce about your favorite players from the past!
Relive Great Sports Memories
Old sporting events are the next best thing to live sporting events, so take this opportunity to re-watch some of your favorite sporting events of the past.
For Ducks fans, this could be the 2006-2007 season, which culminated in the Ducks raising the Stanley Cup. Masochists can also opt for other seasons, specifically the ’02-03 season, where the Ducks lost the Stanley Cup Finals in seven games to the New Jersey Devils.
Exercise!
Exercising indoors is just as rewarding as going to a gym. Use that stationary bike you’ve been throwing clothes on, the treadmill that hasn’t been plugged in since last January, or the yoga mat you’ve been burying under random stuff in the basement. Exercise can help pass time and keep you healthy – and your immune system will appreciate the boost from working out.
Stay Safe
Above all else – and in all seriousness – stay safe out there. Wash your hands, be mindful of what you’re touching while outside, and if you’re feeling under the weather – stay home.
At the first sign of trouble, contact your local physician and get tested – it’s better to be safe than sorry. Focus on keeping yourself and your family safe. Sports are always an escape from the problems of the real world, so when sports become the problem, it hits twice as hard.
Normalcy will return at some point, and we’ll be back to debating who the Ducks should take in the first round in the next draft in no time.
Until then, continue to be well and be awesome to each other.
