The Los Angeles Chargers have come to a much-anticipated contract extension agreement with a star pass rusher, Joey Bosa.

Spotrac did estimate Bosa to be “worth” roughly $21M per year. Bosa not only surpassed what lots of people expected him to receive, he also topped Myles Garrett’s record-breaking contract.

Bosa signed a 5 year, $135 million dollar deal. This deal includes $78 million guaranteed at the moment of signing and $102 million total guaranteed which is a new record for NFL defenders.

Bosa is now the highest-paid player in the NFL not named Patrick Mahomes.

Joey Bosa has the stats to back up this contract. Not only does he have 40 career sacks since he was drafted, but he also topped the league last year in pass rush win rate, sitting at 23.1%, according to Pro Football Focus.

PFF also noted that he was 3rd best in the NFL last season in pass rush win rate on 3rd down at 29.3%. That trails only Houston’s J.J Watt and Chiefs interior defensive lineman Chris Jones.

It was only a couple weeks ago that Myles Garrett signed a contract that made him the highest-paid defender in the league, and now Joey Bosa has topped that himself. Bosa will be getting roughly $27 million per year. Bosa may have set the new standard for pass rushers, and possibly reset the market for elite edge rushers.

It will be interesting to see how contracts look in the future for star-studded pass rushers after what we saw in the month of June.
