The Los Angeles Lakers have a huge decision to make this summer in free agency. The Lakers point guard, Dennis Schroder is an unrestricted free agent. The Lakers made an offer during the season and Schroder turned it down in hopes for more money in free agency. Schroder had a poor playoff performance in his 6 games with the Lakers, averaging 14.3 ppg and 2.8 apg on 40% fg percentage per nba.com. Should the Lakers look to re-sign Schroder or should they move in a different direction?
The first thing the Lakers have to do in free agency is see what other point guards are available. They also have to see what contract is Schroder willing to take to stay with the Lakers. Immediately after their playoff loss, Schroder stated that he wants to come back to the Lakers. Dennis Schroder had a solid season with the Lakers but with 2 separate health and safety protocol occasions, he never quite got in rhythm towards the end of the season.
Dennis Schroder’s defense helped the Lakers become the best defensive team in the regular season. His ability to break down the defense and create shots for others was valuable. The question coming into the season was whether or not he can play with LeBron James and be effective. James showed a willingness to play off the ball and allow Schroder to initiate the offense. The experiment is still up in the air on whether they can play together and win a championship.
If the Lakers are able to acquire a better option at the point guard position then they should go get someone else. The Lakers shouldn’t undervalue Schroder’s production in the regular season due to missing time with Covid and a shortened season. Schroder can still be valuable on this Lakers team and he’s only 27 years old with room to grow with LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
