RECAP – Week 7: Chargers Get Blowonout Against Indianapolis, 38-24
The Chargers were looking to climb back in the AFC standings with a win against the Colts on Sunday; instead, they got blown out, 38-24, at home.
The major takeaways from the game are the lack of defense, issues with the O-line, and Justin Herbert trying too hard to help the team.
Defense Struggles
Though the Chargers’ defense has been good at times, it has been lacking when it matters most. Even though the Chargers have Khalil Mack and linebacker Denzel Perryman, the defense still struggled to stop Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, who ran for 94 yards and scored three touchdowns. The concerning part is that the defense has already given up 118 rushing yards in five straight games.
The defense has also struggled with communication and coverage, and it is failing to generate consistent pressure. Daniel Jones finished the game last week for the Colts with 288 passing yards and two touchdowns.
O-Line Issues
Besides the defense being a disaster lately, the Chargers’ O-line has its own share of problems as of late. The offensive line has struggled the last couple of games in protecting QB Justin Herbert from the defense.
Left tackle Austin Deculus has allowed seven pressures. Right guard Mekhi Becton has performed poorly as well, as he also surrendered seven pressures on the O-line. Herbert has been pressured 27 times on 61 drop-backs in last week’s loss to the Colts.
Justin Herbert is Trying Too Hard
Though Justin Herbert has been phenomenal for the Chargers since he came into the league in 2020, he has had his own share of mistakes for the team as well.
Herbert had a career-high 420 passing yards and three touchdowns, all in the 2nd half of the game. Justin Herbert has also led the team in rushing yards.
The Chargers are on short rest; they play on Thursday night against Minnesota.
Jim Harbaugh is hoping the team can solve its problems and turn things around.
